All Saints Church in Pasadena has launched a search for its next Director of Music, seeking an outstanding musician to lead its music ministry starting August 1, 2018.  

We are a large, vibrant and progressive congregation, and the music program is an integral and deeply valued part of the parish’s fabric and culture.  The Director of Music will oversee an array of musical ensembles, activities and personnel that includes multiple choirs for adults and children/youth, as well as four colleagues on the music staff.

DESCRIPTION
Established in 1886, All Saints today is a large and vibrant Episcopal church in the urban center of downtown Pasadena and a presence in regional Los Angeles. It has a long history of interfaith relationships and an ongoing commitment to local, national and global issues of peace and justice. All Saints is a thriving faith community deeply rooted in a tradition of intellectual engagement and enrichment, and fully committed to offering a deeply fulfilling worship experience of which music is an integral element.

Music at All Saints Church
The mission of the music ministry is to lead the All Saints community in liturgies that glorify God, move the heart, and challenge the mind – all with great variety, color, and reverence.
  • There are two adult choirs – Coventry and Canterbury – each of which includes a paid quartet and about 50 volunteer singers. On Sunday mornings from September through June, one of the adult choirs will be present at two morning services.
  • Coventry Choir sings about 60% of the services, rehearsing Thursdays at 7:30pm, and Canterbury Choir sings about 40% of services, rehearsing Wednesdays at 7:30pm. 
  • The adult choirs participate in 8-­‐10 evening services and a spring concert. Initial membership is by audition. 
  • A Summer Choir (comprised entirely of non-­‐ auditioned volunteers) sings for the 11:15am Sunday service from July through Labor Day Weekend.
  • All Saints’ Children’s and Youth Choir program includes six different choirs and is for any PreK-­‐12th grader who is interested in healthy choral singing in the worship environment. These non-­‐auditioned choirs welcome choristers at all levels, who will participate in various activities throughout the year (e.g. field trips, choir tours, and choir exchanges) and have an opportunity to work with professional instrumentalists and singers.

Our neighborhood in Pasadena is ethnically diverse, gifted with large populations of African American, Latinx and Asian (primarily Chinese) persons. All Saints Church has a long-­‐standing commitment to growing into a truly multicultural congregation, and that commitment is expressed in our music program. We incorporate music from many different traditions and ethnicities into our worship life and seek to deepen that diversity in the years to come.

The Position 
The Director of Music provides musical leadership and creative vision to All Saints’ music ministry, conducting and providing pastoral support to the two adult choirs. 

Collaborating with the Rector and the Director of Liturgy, s/he will plan hymns and service music, researching and selecting choral repertoire appropriate to the liturgical calendar and to the occasion, and hire professional instrumentalists as appropriate.

The Director will conduct auditions for all wishing to join one of the adult choirs and for members wanting to change vocal section. Administrative duties include participation in creating and monitoring the music program budget, leading a weekly music staff meeting, attendance at full staff and operations staff meetings, and collaboration with other departments.

All Saints’ Director of Music supervises the Organist/Associate Choirmaster, the Director of Children’s/Youth Music, the Adult Choir Assistant, and eight paid section leaders/soloists.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be a highly accomplished musician, have a thorough knowledge of choral music, be an excellent conductor and vocal coach, and possess exceptional keyboard skills. S/he will be musically curious and innovative, understand the role that music can play in the expression and experience of faith, and be eager to develop a vision for music and art at All Saints Church.

Because of our commitment to being a multicultural community, we seek an individual who has a knowledge of and facility in leading music from a multiplicity of cultures and who will be a leadership partner with the Rector and others in continuing to enrich the multicultural artistic and musical life of All Saints Church. Facility with languages other than English is an asset. 

We seek an individual who will inspire and connect with members of the adult choirs and with children’s and youth choirs, who will bring a positive and nurturing approach to her/his work with singers and fellow staff members, who has a healthy and caring personality, and who will understand and embrace the importance of pastoring to the community of people who comprise the Coventry and Canterbury choirs.

The Director of Music will be receptive to the needs and interests of All Saints’ congregation, integrating him/herself with the culture of the parish.
