The New Children’s Museum seeks a passionate and motivated Individual Giving & Stewardship Officer to oversee and contribute to essential fundraising efforts in the areas of individual giving and donor stewardship.
This position will manage Development efforts related to individual annual fund donations of up to $999 with the goal of identifying and cultivating donors to move up the giving pipeline (including having regular donor interactions over the phone, at events, and through in-person meetings; overseeing quarterly appeals; ensuring benefit fulfillment and top-notch stewardship; performing wealth screening research; and utilizing the Altru database to track moves management).
This person will also provide essential support to the Director of Individual Giving and VP of Development in the areas of Rain House Society cultivation and stewardship ($1,000 – $9,999), major gift cultivation and stewardship ($10,000+), planned giving, and the Endowment Initiative.
The Individual Giving & Stewardship Officer will also provide administrative support for the Development Department as a whole, including, but not limited to written correspondence, stewardship and benefit fulfillment, donor communications, donor prospecting, event logistics, scheduling, phone calls, and other administrative duties.
- Manage a portfolio of Museum members and donors, utilizing a “breakfast, lunch, coffee, tour” approach to engage and steward them in person.
- Act as a public face for the Museum in the community, attending and occasionally speaking at external events that provide the opportunity to network with current and prospective donors.
- Create and manage a donor stewardship plan to move individual donors up the pipeline through regular interactions and expressions of gratitude.
- Oversee overall departmental donor benefit fulfillment (recognition, event correspondence, birthday cards/photobooks/gifts, etc.).
- Make weekly calls to thank individual donors ($100+) and coordinate “thank you” calls and notes from the Board, Executive Director, VP of Development, and Director of Individual Giving for major gifts/major gift prospects, as appropriate.
- Manage quarterly appeal planning/strategy, communication, and execution, including writing polished and compelling copy for large-scale mailings and emails.
- Generate personalized acknowledgement letters for major gifts.
- Create major gift proposals and ROI reports.
- Attend scheduled department and interdepartmental meetings and record notes, create memos, and perform appropriate follow-up.
- Assist Director of Individual Giving and VP of Development with prospect research and produce profiles for major gift solicitation purposes.
- Provide prospect and donor information to Senior Leadership prior to donor events/meetings.
- Utilize the Museum’s recently completed wealth screening to identify donors/prospects for cultivation.
- Serve as a contact to the Development Committee of the Board of Directors, Board members, and major donors.
- Assist Development team on accommodating Board members and major donors with special requests regarding tours, events, in-kind donations to other institutions, etc.
- Manage communications for keeping major gift donors and Planned Giving Society donors informed and engaged.
- Work with the Senior Development Coordinator to track contributed income, expenses, and cash flow weekly for individual donors.
- Manage and steward developing affinity groups (TBD), which could include a grandparents group, gay parents group, etc.
- Perform regular data entry utilizing the Altru database to record donor and prospect information, touch points, event information, ticketing, and other data pertinent to fundraising efforts.
- Work closely with the Membership team to align efforts, create a pipeline for donors, identify donor prospects, and elevate members to donors.
- Serve as a liaison to the Marketing and Events teams on Development-related needs.
- Perform key functions for fundraiser/friendraiser events throughout the year (i.e. writing copy for letters/invitations/emails, drafting major gift underwriting proposals, procuring RSVPs and guest names, following up with donors on silent auction donations, liaising with Marketing regarding event collateral, assisting with logistics, attending/working events as a front-facing Development representative, etc.):

- Regularly perform administrative functions for the Development staff including scheduling, correspondence, invoices, copying, filing, mailing, meeting material preparation, and similar tasks.

- A valid Driver’s License, insurance and be willing to use it on the job preferred.
- The position requires top notch creative, persuasive writing skills with a keen attention to detail and polished interpersonal and communication skills.
- The candidate must have excellent organizational skills
- Tech-savvy and computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and a development database (Altru preferred). Social media marketing, Mailchimp, and Adobe Photoshop experience a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising or equivalent preferred.
- Master’s degree and/or degree in the arts a plus.
- Passion for the arts, specifically visual arts and arts education preferred.
- Knowledge of museums/nonprofit preferred.
- Knowledge of the San Diego philanthropic community a plus.
