Inner-City Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts organization located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, serving more than 8,000 children, teens, educators and family members annually during the school day, after school and on weekends. We believe that the arts are transformative and the cornerstone of a high-quality education that levels the learning field across socioeconomic boundaries. Inner-City Arts is a dynamic nonprofit organization that fundraises more than 90% of the revenue needed to support annual programs and operations for a $4+ million annual operating budget. The organization is in the final phases of developing a strategic plan that entails significant growth over the next five years, including conducting a major campaign to fund its vision.
 
Responsibilities and Outcomes
The CDO oversees and provides leadership for all fundraising and communications initiatives and activities for the organization while expanding Inner-City Arts’ fundraising capabilities and elevates Inner-City Arts’ fundraising goals.

Working closely with the Director of Development and Director of Institutional Giving, leads a multifaceted development operation including major individual gifts, foundation and government grants, corporate sponsorships and grants, events, board and leadership volunteer development, annual giving, direct marketing and crowdfunding, communications and public relations, and community volunteer opportunities.

The CDO will:
  • Personally develop, lead, and grow major individual gift activities.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and build relationships with donors and prospects with the capacity to give five, six, and seven figure leadership level gifts.
  • Work in close partnership with the CEO, members of the Board, and other development staff members in coordinating their activities in this area, providing coaching and coordination, and leads in creating a cultural shift where individual donors are sought after and highly valued.
  • Design strategies to engage donors, develops tailored proposals and engagement opportunities. Builds a robust pipeline of potential donors through effective research and networking. Constant face-to-face, telephone, and electronic communications with organizational supporters and prospects.
  • Provide energetic and visible leadership and motivation to the Board, Founders Board, and other leadership volunteers.
  • Work with the Board and CEO to develop and implement plans to recruit and involve leadership-level volunteers.
  • Provide leadership and direction to development and communications staff (current team of 9), including providing direct supervision and coaching to the Director of Development and Director of Institutional Giving.
  • Create a collaborative, fun learning environment.
  • As one of five members of executive management, serve as one of the key leaders of the organization.
  • As a strategic thought partner and a skilled collaborator, offer valuable insights and input on broad strategic discussions and builds bridges with Inner-City Arts’ departments, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Monitor progress toward goals for all campaigns.
  • Share regular updates on progress towards goals with senior management, the Board, and campaign leadership.
  • Work closely with the CFO and CEO and others on the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
Qualifications
  • Strong commitment to personal and team excellence.
  • Track record of successfully raising funds, managing a team, and providing leadership to board, staff, and volunteers. Proven fundraising skills, especially in the area of individual donor relationships.
  • Exceptional relationship development skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, as well as to implement and follow-through.
  • Experience leading teams to achieve ambitious objectives.
  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector and awareness of the context in which Inner-City Arts operates.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with grace and diplomacy.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, and ability to passionately communicate the impact of Inner-City Arts’ work.
  • High degree of professionalism and integrity.
